A Disaster's Affect on Your Business
Businesses are the backbone of our communities. However, an estimated 25 percent of businesses do not reopen following a major disaster, according to the Institute for Business and Home Safety.
Now take a minute to reflect on recent national news headlines: Severe weather, Tornadoes, Floods, Blackouts, Spikes in Energy Costs, Unrest around the globe.
Disasters always happen to someone else right? Wrong – every community is exposed to events that may deeply impact the business sector. It may be repairing hail damage, recovering from a fire, staying open during an electrical outage, or many other events that could disrupt your business for hours to days.
“Getting back to business after a disaster depends on preparedness planning done today. Small business owners invest a tremendous amount of time, money and resources to make their ventures successful, and yet, while the importance of emergency planning may seem self-evident, it may get put on the back-burner in the face of more immediate concerns.” --- Small Business Administration

“Buechel Stone’s quality products are in high demand and I am happy to support this growing family-owned Wisconsin company,” Governor Doyle said. “I applaud Buechel Stone for investing in the Chilton community and bringing new high skill, high-paying jobs to Calumet County.”
Buechel Stone Corp. was formed in 1964 by Francis and Alyce Buechel. They converted their 125 acre farm into a working quarry and originally called the company Buechel Stone, Co. The Fox Cities Quality of Life Assessment
A Community Life Assessment for the Fox Cities was recently completed this spring. The assessment is done every five years on the region. The Fox Cities 2006 L.I.F.E. (Leading Indicators For Excellence) is an overview of the socio-economic conditions in the Fox Cities region, which includes Calumet County.
Information was obtained by surveys that were sent out, census data, interviews, and many focus groups. All aspects of the community were studied. Leisure, safety, education, natural environment, collaboration, community leadership, health care, community services, home, human services and the workplace were some of the pieces of community that were looked at.
In the Economic Development section, 89% of people surveyed were very positive about the area’s infrastructure and quality of life features to support business. The report also reveals an encouraging outlook at hiring and profit gains within the region. For a more detailed summary on the study, visit the Fox Cities Life Study website: http://www.foxcitieslifestudy.org/uwfclife/2006+life+study/default.asp.
Study: Lake Winnebago Anglers Have Economic Impact
Findings from a survey that was sent out to 2,000 local anglers who fish on the Lake Winnebago System show a strong economic impact on the area.
ITBEC (International Trade, Business and Economic Development Council), which is an organization that Calumet County is a part of, also participated in this study by helping fund it. ITBEC has also produced guides such as Lake Winnebago Road Trip, Cruisn' the Lake: A Boater's Guide to the Lake Winnebago System, and A Taste of the Lakes. ITBEC recognized the importance of this study.
The study was coordinated by UW-Extension, UW-Green Bay, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Madison and the DNR. The study was radomly sent to recreational and tournament anglers that fish on the Lake Winnebago System. The response rate was 60% which is excellent for mailed surveys.
Recreational and tournament fishing dollars were analyzed and results show that recreational and tournament angling in the Lake Winnebago System brings $147.5 million into the area. Along with $147.5 million which is considered to be the the direct spending in the area, an additional $73.9 million in generated through the local economy. The money coming into the area both directly and indirectly create 4,300 jobs in the region.
“The good thing about these data is that they are generated locally from actual numbers reported by anglers – not extrapolated from statewide or national figures,” said Catherine Neiswender, UW-Extension Winnebago County. “We can be quite confident that these numbers do a good job of reflecting the economic contribution of angling to our local economy."
Dr. John Stoll, Professor of Economics at UW Green Bay, who conducted the survey and its preliminary analysis, said that the multiplier effect is about 1.5. “For every dollar spent in the area, another $0.50 is generated in the local economy.”
170,000 anglers fish the Lake Winnebago System each year. 98,000 trips are made by anglers who are from out of state and 451,000 trips are made by local anglers.
Out of state anglers spend an estimated $96 million while in the area and local anglers spend roughly $67 million.
For more information on the survey, contact Catherine Neiswender, UW-Extension at (920)232-1972 or Chad Cook, UW-Extension at (920)232-1990, or Kendall Kamke, DNR at (920)424-7880.
